Default no start then start

Hi guys, I've been searching for any answer to my problem.. MY 94 ZJ has just recently started to give me fits... I turn the key and no start, lights on dash are on as should be but no start. I turn the key off and on sometimes once and sometimes several times and it will start. When no start there is nothing happening, not radio or heater fan or anything until you release the key. any thoughs about where to start. I am thinking it may be the ignition switch.. ????

Either that or maybe the linkage.. I had similar problem, bought the switch, but when I got in there, I found a broken plastic piece. Easy fix, just needed a small torx wrench to get the switch out. Mine's a '93 Laredo

NAPA will have the switch, but I recommend getting one from the dealer. Take a look at the long flat electrical connector on the bottom of the switch and make sure none of the terminals are burnt, especially the wire for the aux circuit. The dealer should have a repair harness if there are some fried wires.

had the same problem It was the ignition switch also had problem with the tilt down it would start and with tilt up it wouldn't that was a result of a bad connection on the flat plug that hooks to the ignition

thanks guys, haven't had the time to look at it yet. Holidays and all. I'm going to try and take some time tomorrow PM to look over the switch and check out the things you brought up.. No problems today all. If is a jeep after all. LOL You gotta love um.

I'll have to check if putting the tilt up or down makes a difference. Thank you..

My quess is it is not the fuel pump as it would crank but not start. Had that problem on my 96 GMC van a year ago.. Like you said it just seems to not engage the starter as needed.. Mine started after turning the key to off then to start again.. It was an intermitten problem for a day and that was all.

Like I said earlier it was a problem for a day and haven't returned as yet. I did remove the lower plastic piece from the sterring column and pushed up on the connector at the switch. but that was only yesterday and the problem was over a week ago and I've been driving it every day. Didn't see any movement when I pushed up on the connector but who knows maybe it was just a little bit out of wack..

It is a Jeep after all.

Well guess what ,, today the gremlin returned. went to go to dinner and no start. tried turning the key several times and no start.. then one time it did.. All lights on as should be and now I hear clunk as the starter tries to engage but will not turn the engine over. Too late to try and fine fix this evening will test grounds and ground wires before replacing the starter. Any thoughts. ???

Well found my problem.. after trying the switch ,NO JOY, and taking the starter out and over to NAPA saying it iwas good.. Spent most of the day chasing my tail, Decided to install a new starter, Guess what TUDAAAAA ALL JOY.. Starts like a new one... It tested OK at NAPA but just would not turn over the engine.. Anyway it s done, on to the next project... Replacing/installing exhast header gaskets as theer is a lot of noise seeming to come from that area..
