Are you sure #1 is TDC on the compression stroke (not the exhaust stroke)? If not, you'll need to pull the timing chain and turn the cam one rev to get it on the compression stroke. Just a thought.

well the timing marks lined up on the gears of the timing chain ?

did you hook up your ground to the engine?

For 4.6L engine:
With crankshaft mark lined up with TDC mark on the cover, The dot on the crankshaft sprocket should be at 12 o'clock and the dot on the small lower gear should be at 6 o'clock. Both camshaft drive gears should have the V8 marks at the 6 o'clock position (if they are in the 12 o'clock position then you are on the exhaust stroke). Turn the crank so theat the crankshaft gears show V8 at the bottom (TDC of the combustion stroke - V8 at 6 o'clock), then insert your distributor so that it is firing on the number 1 cylinder.

yes grounds are tight on block .and this is a straight six 4.0L year 94.and yes big gear for cam is at six ocklock and small gear for crank is at 12 oclock.and mark is at o on timing cover.

OK your timing chain is set up right but there's a chance you may have your distributor set up with TDC on the exhaust stroke (I know because I've done it before). Your crank turns two 360's for every one 360 on the cam. With the crank set at TDC on the compression stroke, the valves on the #1 cylinder should be closed (you can check by pulling the valve cover off and looking at the camshaft to see if it's pushing on any of the #1 valves - if it is, turn the crank one revolution and it will be at TDC of the compression stroke). Another check is to pull the #1 plug out and place your finger over the spark plug hole while turning the crank. As the crank approaches TDC of the compression stroke you will feel the air from the compressiuon push you finger off the plug hole (if its on the exhaust stroke it will just throw the air out of the exhaust port and you can hold your finger on the plug hole). Make sure that when you have the engine set up at #1 cylinder at TDC on the compression stroke that the distributor is lined up to throw fire to the #1 cylinder. If you have the distributor set up with the engine at TDC of the exhaust stroke it will not start.

ok i will try it again .

compression stroke

doesnt want to start got the compression stroke tried to put distributor on 1 nothitng .put it just beforen1 and got smoke out intake like it wanted to fire but nothing .what i noticed is that when it hits comression stroke it starts before the 0 mark on the timing cover like at 24 mark .should i try putting distributor in when compresion starts?

Take a look at the pictures in this link. It should help you get the distributor lined up right. Sounds like you may be a tooth off.

finally got it started looked at the manual that had it a tooth off.i was trying to have it lined up dead on #1 plug .in pic it is slightly after 1just a hair more .did like the link and it fired right up .now the only thing is when i installed engine i broke off map sensor vacume plug and its rough idle when i let the gas off .broke in cam for 30 min .now gotta get a map sensor and get check eng lite off .thanks callea

Glad to see you got it started... I didn't jump in because i wouldn't have been much help in that area... But I've been pullin for you all the same... Good luck..

callea 02-09-2012 06:32 AM

Glad to hear you worked it out. If the vaccum fitting is plastic you may be able to super glue it back together and save yourself from buying a MAP sensor. I've done that trick before and it worked fine.

FILO 02-09-2012 06:42 PM

no problem generalcrawl apreciate it. did superglue it and it fixed the problem thanks callea its running awsome now gonna break engine in before i hit the mud .thanks !
