Default No running lights or dash lights?

I just recently bought a 98 grand cherokee 5.9 limited and have been fixing the issues it had and it seems like once I fix one problem two more pop up. Yesterday after replacing the worn hatch struts I went out and when I turned on the lights none of the dash lights came on and I have no running lights. The headlights work and the brake lights when I step on the brake but I have no parking lights or fog lights? Also when I turn the lights on the radio and the info display do not dim either. The door lights work and so do the lights on the floor but no gauge lights or dash. I searched around and it seem like I'm not the only one that has had this happen and everyone says to look at fuse number 1. The problem I have is someone removed the interior fuse block cover so I have no idea what number any of the fuses are or what they go to. I did look at my buddies grand cherokee and fuse number one said it was for the radio and my radio works fine so maybe they are talking about fuse number one under the hood? I haven't had a chance to go out and look at the jeep with my meter in the day since it was dark when the lights starting acting up and it is currently snowing so I won't be able to look at it till tomorrow. If anyone has any info please let me know. This jeep is testing my patience and I have only owned it for a week.

on the back of the fuse panel cover it shows which fuse is which. i can check in the morning, but i believe it is the fuse closest to the fire wall and the top fuse i believe is number one... my best suggestion would be run to walmart or any autoparts store and buy a little fuse tester you just touch the *top* of the fuse with it and it tells you if its good or not.... thats been my best friend with my jeep since ive got it

That's the problem I don't have the fuse cover its missing. I have a test light and am going to use that to see if I have power on the fuses. What I was wondering if anyone else had the same problem and what they did to fix it.

I had the same thing happen to me and I think it was fuse #7 that I had to replace. Its a fuse on the interior not one of the ones under the hood.

Do your power windows and door locks work? Also if you drive it does your speedo work? I've blown a fuse under the hood one time and all that went out on my 93. I'd start by just checking and replacing every blown fuse you find

I found the illumination fuse blown for the gauge cluster. It is really weird that it also runs the parking lights. I'm not used to american vehicles I have always owned and worked on imports so its going to take getting used to. Thanks for everyones advice and help. I'm sure I will be posting here for some more help as this vehicle had gotten wet inside from a leaking sunroof and it has electrical gremlins that are getting annoying.

I had the same problem, but with my XJ, and it was the headlight switch. I put a new switch in and it was fine.
