Newbie With Problems
 

Hi everybody! I'm new to the forums and have a couple questions on my buddies 1998 Grand Cherokee Limited. Its got the 318, 4x4, etc. Its been acting up lately and I'm hoping to get some advice.

The problem is this...Sometimes while driving, out of nowhere, the jeep will start surging and acting like it has a misfire, but will clear up for a few minutes and run fine, then it will act up again. Scanned the CEL and got codes for a fuel level sensor, o2 sensor, and speed sensor. He had already bought new plugs and wires(the old ones had 165k miles on them), so we changed them out and the jeep is still acting the same. My question(s) are, would any 3 of the above mentioned sensors cause the surging/stumbling? It seems to mainly happen while going around corners, which would lead me to believe that its fuel related with the gas swooshing around in the tank. Also, where exactly are the fuel level sensor and speed sensor located? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you

I think there is a fuel problem, there could be trash in the tank that clogs the strainer at the bottom of the fuel pump while turning. The vehicle speed sensor is on the tail housing of the transfercase, but there is also an output speed sensor on the transmission too. What exactly was the O2 code?

Those are my thoughts on the fuel as well. I don't remember exactly what the code was for the o2...I'll try to get up with him tomorrow so I can throw my scanner back on it.

If it's fuel starvation, the 02 code should be for a lean condition. This can also set a misfire code. If you can find someplace to borrow a fuel pressure guage with a long hose on it, you can try driving it and watching the fuel pressure when it starts to misbehave.

I think we figured it out! One of the o2 sensor wires had come apart and was swinging over and hitting the exhaust every time he turned. Took care of that and she's been running great. I guess time will tell. He also told me today that the engine computer fuse had blown a few times. That would probably be from the wire hitting the exhaust I'm assuming.
