Default New to site 2004 WJ 4.0l

Hi all.
OK where to start I found this vehicle for a good price and was looking for something big enough to pull the pop up camper with...so far its been OK

Had A/c fixed bad valve on the fire wall not sure what the name of the valve is but its blowing colder now . Living in Florida with no A/C is not possible...

Second issue still having issue is over heating....this is what i have done so far Changed upper and lower hoses thermostat and fluid. running better but gets really hot at redlights and slow traffic.

what is the next step? waterpump ? Fan? manual switch?

Your suggestions are greatly appreciated and welcomed.

After I get this issue fixed i would like to lift 2" and get new 245 ish sized tires too but gotta get this temp thing squared up first.

I have looked through the searches and am still doing so but maybe this is faster....

Thanks

First of all, welcome to CF.

Next, your overheat problem seems to be airflow thru the radiator, that is, lack of it at low speeds. I would suspect a fan problem. Does your fan run whenever the temp exceeds 210*? If not, I would suspect the relay is faulty. It should run anytime the A/C is on also. A lot of guys install a manual relay bypass switch for use when rock crawling or mud bogging. You can tap into the cigarette lighter for power. It's fused at 20 amps and is only hot in accessory or run. The relay is in a really PIA place, it's underneath the passenger's headlight mount. Why it's there, only Jeep knows.

Word to the wise. When towing your camper, lock out the O/D. It will keep the temp down in your trans and save the clutches in the O/D. If your vehicle has the tow package, you already have an aux trans cooler. If not, my advise is to add one. The 4.0 WILL feel the weight of the camper, but shouldn't be a problem.

My 2000 WJ has the 245/70R16 tires on it and really could use a 2" lift. I have problems with snow pack in the winter. Nothing you should be concerned about, lol!

Is there an upgrade fan? I would like to know more about a fan bypass switch. Does any one have a wiring diagram for the fan so I know where to tap into??

My 2000 WJ is a base model without several bells and whistles of better models, like power seats, lighted vanity mirrors, or automatic climate control. It does have an electric fan and has NEVER overheated. When it's running, it moves one hell of a lot of air. My particular fan is slightly out of balance so when it's running, I can feel a slight vibration. It comes on at about 210* but the guage never shows a change, either up or down. It's only a single speed so it shouldn't be a problem to figure out which wire supplies power to it at the connector plug. You can run it thru a separate relay if you want, but some people don't.

In order to fix it right, you'll have to check the relay to see if it's functioning or not getting a signal to turn on. The bypass switch is just an added safeguard.

Is your electric fan working? My wife's WJ acted just like yours when it needed a new relay.

Seems to me he missed your point on the relay.. so I asked outright if the fan was operational.

Not on the 2004. Both relays (low & high speed) are in the fuse/relay box beside the battery....very easy to get to. You could swap the 2 relays with each other and see what happens.

OK finally had time to check it.
With vehicle hot fan turns on at 210ish. Drove down the road and back home still at 210. let it sit for about ten minutes in driveway running and was still ok. turned A/C on and gave another 5 min. temp got to 230.....fan still running at this point.
Looks like I got something else going on.

So now what do i check?

Thanks
