No need to reverse. If it is in 4hi, all you need to do is push the transfercase shifter forward into 2wd. If in 4lo, you need to stop the vehicle and put the transmission into PARK or NEUTRAL and then push the transfercase selector into 2wd or 4hi.

X2. Some claim you need to back up to get it in, but it's not needed when everything's working and adjusted correctly.
The following info comes from the ZJ FSM:
NV242 DIAGNOSIS
Condition
TRANSFER CASE DIFFICULT TO SHIFT OR WILL NOT SHIFT INTO
DESIRED RANGE
Possible Cause
(1) Transfer case external shift linkage binding.
(2) Insufficient or incorrect lubricant.
(3) Internal components binding, worn or damaged.
Correction
(1) Lubricate, repair or replace
linkage, or tighten loose
components as necessary.
(2) Drain and refill to edge of fill
hole with DEXRONII or MOPARMERCON
Automatic Transmission
Fluid.
(3) Disassemble unit and replace
worn or damaged components as
necessary.
