Need help with symptoms
I have an infamous stalling jeep
97 grand Cherokee Laredo straight 6 optional 4x4
I have replaced the laundry list of items that everyone else has replaced. yet this problem persists and is getting worse
Heres the deal....
After about 20min of driving the jeep starts to act up with some sputtering and loss of power, hitting the gas pedal does nothing with the exception of getting some back fire here and there... A couple of months ago the back fire got so bad it blew out my cat and muffler. I just got these fixed and Im still getting some back fire
The jeep seems to heat up and start acting up, so its leading to believe it is a sensor or electrical issue of some kind... however, when the jeep stalls it is hard to get started and when it starts back up there is a heavy exhaust smell for a min or so which makes me think there is extra fuel getting in or there is fuel simply not getting burned
Could this be nothing more than needing to replace the computer? (please do not bring up the screw and washer trick, this is not the issue)
Do I have electrical components failing when getting heated up?
Could this be a vacuum leak of some sort?
I have dumped plenty of fuel system cleaner in the tank but no help
Im worried about taking it to a dealer for the obvious reason of being financially raped.... If anyone has any areas to suggest attention to that would be great
thanks

Old fart with a wrench
Yes, violent backfire like you describe is generally cause by a break in the ignition circuit (loose connection) or firing pulses on the wrong cylinder.
