Default Need help with front main oil seal replaced timing chain stuff with kit

Hi,

I've got a picture of my seal job on the timing cover of my 99 jeep GC 4.0.
I'm really new at this so, if someone could do a nice inspect of the job at say
its ok to put cover on I'll feel alot better about this.

I did not have a socket or anything to put it in. So I used a board and
hammer to get it in and put a little oil around the rubber to get it in.
I think its ok, but the inner seal portion wasn't a perfect circle so that bothered me a tad. Some one on youtube said its fine its in there good and isnt going anywhere.

Thanks if all possible I just have never worked on a car before this is my first and many of you have been greatly helpful. It's on my bucket list to do this.
:-)

Thanks

It should be OK - was the seal mis-shapen out-of-the-box?

I would say throw it in there and see if it leaks. Worst case it will weep some oil, but you should be able to see how "tight" the gasket mates when you side it on the crankshaft. If it is really bad, I would suggest just replacing the seal while you have everything apart so you don't have to re-do your work.

I bought one of these ball-joint tools a long time ago - the cups that it comes with have been super handy on many occasions. When I do my timing chain, I will probably use one of the cups to hammer the seal into the timing cover

It wasn't bent out of box. And for the most part it appears to be fairly flush.
