Need Help
Greetings. I have a 96 Grand Cherokee with 4.0L and a 249 transfer case. The viscus coupler is ready to end its service life. I have a 242 transfer case and the rear drive shaft for a swap. The 242 and rear drive shaft came from a 98 Grand Cherokee. Once I swap in the 242, Do I need to swap out the front drive shaft if I do A Iroc 3.5 with 31" tires? Here are a few pics as my jeep sits now. You can see the front drive shaft has the CV output from the front axle. I have read many threads that say the CV need to be swaped out for a universal joint setup such as a spicer, or carden setup. First pic is the front axle. Second pic is from the output at the transfer case to front axle. Third is the rear axle. Fourth is the transfer case output to the rear axle.
What do I need to do here to get the front axle swapped out?

T-case swap should be fine and you will need to swap the front yoke on the axle as well as swap the front drive shaft before you lift it.

Remove the circle of bolts that retain the cv joint to the front retainer. After moving the cv joint/driveshaft out of the way, you'll see a large nut that holds the cv retainer to the pinion shaft. Place the new u-joint flange on the pinion shaft and tighten to the required spec.
You can locate a driveshaft from a Grand Cherokee equipped with the u-joints, usually a 231/242 equipped or an older model. There were 3 types of u-joint shafts used, type 3 being the cv one. I used a type 1 to replace that on the '97 Grand that I had. That's because of the slip yoke dust cap w/the grease fitting on it.

Thanks OL"Blue. What model and year do I need to get the drive shaft from?
Seems I read a thread somewhere on a form that had it but I can't seem to find it. Starting on the 249 to 242 swap Thursday.
Thanks,
-Gary
