motor knocking sound
Hi everyone. Im new here and in need of some wisdom. I just picked up my 1st jeep ever. Its an 03 cherokee v6. It runs but theres a knocking sound coming from the front of motor. Oil is dark but no signs of water. What happened was previous Owner over heated it and now it has this knock sound . as i give more gas the knock gets faster and louder. I will post a vid tomorrow. What could this be?

does it go away as the car warms up? could be something as simple as valve lifter noise... or it could be rod knock.
why not do an oil change and put in some thicker oil and see if it still does it?

Sounds like a rod knock, but maybe the vid will show more to be sure.
Although, if it over heated, the pistons and such would swell up too, so it's hard to say.

Welcome to CF!
It's probably a spun connecting rod bearing. The bearing insert got hot enough to weld itself to the crankshaft and spin with it. If the oil pressure is still above 20 psi, chances are the motor can be saved, but you have to act NOW before it destroys itself. JMHO.
BTW, that's an iron block straight 6, 4.0 liter.

Sorry. I knew it was an i6. Not sure why i put v6 lol. I will post vid later today when im at work. If worst case i need to replace motor im ok with that but if i could fix it without pulling this motor would be great.

That sounds to me like a valve problem, not a rod knock.

Not yet! Check out the top end first. It's a lot easier to work on the head if the problem is there.

Alright. So i since purchased my cherokee at a kick a$$ deal. I will be removing the valve cover today. I really hope it is a head prob and not a piston sleave.

Everything up here looks good. no sludge just clean oil. This was a very good motor until it was over heated. 107k miles. No cracks, and rockers are all snug. Oil pans coming off next.
