Mechanical fan
My father just bought a 03 WJ and it only has the electric fan on the radiator and we were wondering if we can get a mechanical fan of another WJ and just put it on his because he tows a small trailer sometimes and the boat in the summer, just as a pro caution. Thank you

The WJ never used a mechanical fan, but the mounts are still there and you can get one from a ZJ (93-98) and install it. Just make sure you have the room it swing it.

Confused. My 2000 has a mechanical fan and hydraulic (electric) fan. There are 2. No tow package.

My 2000 4.0 basic Laredo only has an electric fan and I've loaded her down with about a ton of newspapers and at low speed with stops and starts over a period of 5 hours has never overheated EXCEPT when the relay sh!t to bed.
I thought only the 4.7 had the hydraulic fan. IDK what the tow package jeeps have. |

I doubt this will help anyone but the mechanical fan on a WJ was an option from the dealer or an upgrade you can buy later on. I just found this out today.

Also, I believe only the 4.7 had the hydraulic fan driven by the power steering pump. A major expense when they start leaking. My 2000 WJ 4.0 only has an electric fan, but has the threaded hub for a clutch fan on the water pump. It looks like there is enough room to swing one. This is a basic Laredo model without any of the goodies like power seats or dual zone climate control. It also has the 242 t/case which I love.
Actually, I think a solid mount (without the clutch) mechanical fan would be good, but you'd have to make your own hub. |

If I might make 2 suggestions for you one is to get a FSM for your year WJ in PDF format from pacificcoastmanuals.com ($7.95 for download and can be printed) and the second one is to get a build sheet on your WJ from Jeep all you need is the vin #. Then you will know every option it came from the factory with, I found a lot about mine when I did on my 04 WJ "Overland" that I knew nothing about.

On 2012 the blades of the electric fan on my 99 WJ just exploded so i took it off and put in a fanclutch from a 2000 dodge dakota, never overheated since the swap and the MPG were practically the same, two years later i sold it and new owner has been happy so far. By the way, i must tell you that moisture and heat where i live can make a car cry. My 2 cents.
