Lost first gear & OD, what happened?
 

Well as the title says on my way to work today after the first stop light I lost first gear & od in my 94 JGC 4.0 Auto 4x4. When I came to the first stop sign when I went to go again I had no first gear. I manually shifted in to first but it seemed like it was in second gear. I found if I put it in neutral and gave it a little gas and quickly put the shifter into first gear I would have first. I also had no OD. I tried shutting the jeep off and that did not help. I also tried disconnecting the battery and touched the cables together for 30 seconds trying to reset the computers. I at that point had first gear again for 2 stops then gone again. May just have been a coincidence since the jeep sat for a while, not sure. Up until this point maybe once a month it would do this and I could just restart the jeep and it would be fine for another month or more. Speed sensor in the trans? TCU? Solenoids in the trans? I'm stuck at work so I don't have time to mess with it but right now it's my only vehicle and I don't want to fry the clutches in the trans starting off in second gear.

I just took a break and pulled the transmission code went like this -- -- ----- ----- I am assuming that is a code 14? Governor pressure sensor input? Does this sound right?

If I'm reading your dashes right, that's a code 22 and a 55. The 55 is "end of test". The 22 is a coolant temp sensor malfunction. Where do you get a 14? That's a MAP sensor code.

From the symptoms, you're going in and out of "limp" mode. This a a program that allows you to drive it home when there is a problem. Many things can set this code and you need to have the TCM codes read by the dealer. A normal scanner won't read the TCM. It may cost you $100 but then you'll know what the problem is.

The codes came from the OD light. I just found this:

The TCM, transmission control module, will throw codes just like the Power Control Module will. To read the codes you count the number of times the Over Drive lamp lights. The Over Drive lamp is located on the over drive switch. Turn the ignition key on & off three times; leaving it in the on position on that third trial.

so I guess I have a code 22. I was did not know the code was 55 for the end of the test. So I have a bad OD solenoid or at least a bad signal from it is what I gather.

Well, I learned something today. I wasn't aware that's the way to get trans codes. My '00 WJ doesn't have a separate TCM so the codes should come up in the odometer like all the rest. Mine are "P" codes rather than light flashes which make it easy to figure them out. Right now I have a P0740 which is torque converter clutch solenoid.

If you do your own trans work, I downloaded a tech manual for the 42re for $11.99. It is 109 pages and consists of a 23MB pdf file. It is quite extensive and well worth buying. All I did was "Bing" 42re transmission manual.

Thanks, I'll look in to that. So should I replace all my solenoids while I'm in there? Seems like this is pretty common after reading up on it more. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Dodge-Chrysl...886de6&vxp=mtr I found this kit on ebay, does this sound about right as far as cost goes or can I find a better deal off of rockauto or someplace like that?

so I may have lucked out. A friend of mine works for a transmission shop and they had a customer have them install all new solenoids in a 42re. well that did not fix the guys problem so he had them install some used transmission he bought somewhere (still did not fix the guys issue) so they kept the transmission they had just installed the solenoids in. Says I can have it for free! Hope it all works out.

Never mind that last post, no go on the solenoids for free. Someone turned it in as a core on accident. Oh well, guess my search continues.
