Locking the lift gate w/remote

Locking the lift gate w/remote
I have a 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee- Laredo.
When I lock my jeep with the remote all doors lock except the lift gate and lift gate glass. If I lock the lift gate with a key both lock. Here's my problem, I've just bought it and I don't know if the remote should or should not lock the hatch along with the doors. Reading the drivers handbook makes me think the remote should lock/unlock doors and lift gate

Engine: 4.0 with all of the noise and clatter
The remote should lock everything. If you lock the liftgate manually will the liftgate unlock with the remote?
