Jeep G.C. Electronic Ignition Parts
 

I have a 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4.0 WJ that currently runs on a distributor. OK!! I know this year vehicle should have an electronic Ignition setup. BUT, I’m sure that a previous owner put in a replacement engine from an earlier JGC. Setting up the distributor has been a right royal pain & I’m still getting intermittent misfires. I could relatively quickly get hold of a new replacement distributor but can anyone advise me on parts & procedures to set it up with an electronic ignition setup? Is this a practical option or should I go along with the dizzy? If anyone can give me some guidance on which route, I’d be very grateful.

Please pardon my directness but I cannot be any more emphatic. Determine everything you can about that engine before you do something you might regret.

Where is your oil filter located? If it's screwed into the side of the block high, then it's a 99-07 "Clean side" block. If it's mounted on an adapter near the oil pan, it's an older block. The XJs still used the older block, but went with a coil rail and cam sensor in 2000. I believe your original PCM would need to be reprogramed to run with a distributor. I hate it when people cobble things up to work.

Just so you will know, the 4.0 with a coil pack (rail) uses the waste spark system where 2 plugs fire together, one on compression and one on exhaust. There are only 3 coils in the rail that fire all 6 cylinders. Whoever set that engine up to run on a dizzy had to have talent. You'd be in a heap of trouble if that PCM quits working.
