Thanks to the previous posts on this subject I finally go mine fixed!
Mine ('98 GC limited, 4.0 I6) ran fine for a while after I got it in November and then around 2 months ago, it began stalling and sometimes backfiring.
Many times it would stall at a light---It would ususally crank back up with no problem (occassionally it would need a jump after a bit of cranking).
Anyway, I finally got a chance to get up close and personal with the PCM behind the radiator reservoir and found one of the connectors had broken latches and there were remains of a nylon cable-tie that had broken.
I jiggled the connector while the engine was running and sure enough, it stalled.
I re-cable-tied the connector and the problem seems to have gone away.
I'm going to make a better way to fasten it, but at least I know where the problem was/is.
