How do i take the front drive shaft off ?

This is for my 5.9 with its front cv half shaft. Something wierd is happening to my Jeep.

The last 3 days its been pretty scary to drive it. Basicly i have this wierd noise under the shifter handle that increases speed when its about to shift gears, it sounds like a small grinding noise from a bearing or something not grinding noise like gears make but more like a noise that a bad wheel bearing would make if you spin it by hand.

Now on top of that something is vibrating really bad under the Jeep.. it grinds/knocks, rattles whatever and i can feal it coming through the transmission shifter handle.. Its getting scary to drive it now..

My first thoughts were it could be the torque converter, or the transmission front pump. But the noise is still there when i put the transmission into neutral and turn the engine off when im rolling on the road.. If it were either of those or something else in the tranny wouldnt the noise go away when the engine is turned off when im rolling ?

So since the viscous coupler wont fry on my 249 when i take the front shaft off thats what i want to try. How do you take these front cv half shaft's off ? I know there are 4 small bolts on the u-joint end, but what about the part on the differential. Do i really unbolt all like 8 of those bolts ? Cause its like a disk on the end and has like 8 bolts going around it.

You will fry the viscous driving without the front shaft and you not have PARK, but chances are pretty good the viscous coupler is already fragged.

5.9 is a 98 so unless your VC is already fried you wont hurt it taking the shaft out and you will still have park. The problem with taking the front shaft out is on 95 and older, 96-99 the 249 is differant and it wont hurt it. And to answer your question yes you remove the bolts I believe theres 6 around that disk on front diff and 4 at TC.

Problem solved, i found out what was making my noises. The fuel line runs over top of the transmission. There is a bracket which holds the line stable directly under the transmission shifter hander down there. The bolt on mine rattled loose and the bracket was bouncing up and down on the floorboard below the transmission shifter handle.

The slurping noises i was hearign was the fuel in the line reverberating through the sheet metal lol..

As for the viscous coupler. I already took my 249 apart and replaced my bad VC about 3-4 months ago. Taking the front drive shaft off on the newer 249's doesnt hurt the VC like the older 249's.. They may be called nv or np 249 but they are atually really different tc's
