Last time it was checked and supposedly changed by the mechanics in Cherokee's garage they said that next change should be done in 100k kilometers, it is not 30k yet. I've been checking transmission oil in our car when off and showed normal, however when I check on neutral with engine on, the level was not even reaching the minimum required. So that I added 1/4 gallon of Valvoline ATF, checked again in neutral and showed little less than full, I'd say 3/4 full. Today the car is off and cold and checked again and shows full. What is the appropriate way to check it: on or off? and how often is advised to change it?

Most automatic transmissions are checked while idling, in park or neutral, and warm. As to the level, exact capacity i dont know since I have a manual, but it should show in the "safe" range on the stick.
