Horrid noise from transfer case!
Just picked up a '95 GC from a co-worker for peanuts but it needs work. It's my 2nd Cherokee but my other was a '96 XJ Country which I much preferred...
It sat for 13 months but in just a few days I got it rolling with a battery, radiator, fluids, gas, etc.. I experienced my first bout of death wobble yesterday but that's for later. The transfer case when in 2WD had an annoying clicking noise that could be heard down the street and when put into part time 4wd it would stop monetarily but start again even worse with a clunking sound. Stopping to put it in 4 low and it was like someone threw broken glass into a blender!
Anyway, I took off the front shaft and of course the noise is gone. If I spin the output to the front drive on the transfer case the sound it makes is almost like a "slack chain" hitting the housing type sound. I haven't any experience with the workings so I don't know how else to describe it. Wondering if it is user fixable or shot? Any ideas?
Thanks
Steve

Hit the salvage yard at lunch for a seat belt and asked about a transfer case. He has one pulled and will sell it for $200. I believe I need a command-trac 231.
