Default holy cow, loud thunk !

The last two mornings have been -26 and -23 and the high temp was around -15..... the rear of my 2001 GC sounds like it's going to come slamming through the floor on any little bump! Is it just the rear shocks being so damn cold that they aren't working as they usually would or could it be something else? It wasn't doing it before this deep freeze. Just curious.

Yeah, it could be the shocks. My WJ seems to have an odd rumble like the tailpipe banging on the frame, but it's not touching anywhere, and it didn't do it before someone left the freezer door open. Mine might be the rubber hangers being frozen, but you would think they'd defrost as the truck warms up. I haven't had a chance to do much troubleshooting with a wind chill of -37*. I think I'll replace the shocks after we get some warmer temps. Whenever that will be. Thanks for something else to check out.

I've also been told to check out the upper rear axle control arm mount. On the WJs it's a single point mount on top of the diff.

It's supposed to be in the 40s this weekend, if the clunk is still there I'm going to look into it but if it goes away once the temps warm up I guess I'll know it was the deep freeze.
Can shocks "blow out" when it gets this cold? I mean to the point where they are just ruined?

If they are old, the added fluid pressure can cause the shaft seals to leak. It's pretty obvious if that happens what with fluid running down the outsides. Gas shocks are prone to loosing the gas charge.
