OK I've been posting all day with no response. I, have been wheeling for 3 years since I got my licens and am trying to upgrade form stock and no one is saying anything help please!

what kind of wheeling do you do? IMO armor is always a good start you can get a nice lift and big tires instead but if u dont have anything to protect ur drivetrain its kind of foolish

I'm thinking a 2 inch lift with 31s any recommendation on brands or prices and I'm looking for skid plates to but can't find any good one suggestions?

As for wheeling I do mostly trails and hill climbs will be moving from wisconsin to Arizona in 6 months so from mud to dirt and sand

a 2 inch lift with 31s will be tight offroad. on road you might be fine with no rubbing but as soon as you start flexing offroad your tear your fenders appart. i have a 3.5 inch lift with 31s and i trimmed my fenders up pretty high and they still rub when wheeling hard

The tires I plan to use are Mickey thompson claw ttc
And with the rims I have the smallest tire I can get is a 33x11.5 r16 so I'd need at least a 4in lift right?

not sure, i see you have a grand cherokee so im not sure about what tire sizes will fit and such, you could try doing a search on here for the answer, like i said all i know is on my cherokee i have a 3.5 inch lift with 31s and trimmed fenders and when im offroad they still like to rub a little

I have ran 33's with no lift and trimming(not suggested, had very little flex room...but now am running 33's with a 2" budget boost and like it...ideally i'd like about one more inch of lift and it'd be awesome off road...with the 2" i have now it does off road good just not as much flex as needed at times...but i wheel it more in mud and snow, i have my xj for when i need to really flex...as i stated in another thread, if you dont want to trim, keep good mpg's and want to have tire room go with a cheap ebay 2" budget boost($55) and 31's...if you dare to do what many are to scared to do, trim and go with 33's...also you'll need less backspaced wheels with the 33's or wheel spacers.

Here it is with no lift and 33's

If you have a WJ 1999-2004 you will need about 6" to run 33" Tires, you may be able to go a little less by trimming a bunch of sheetmetal off.

If you are going to go 6" you really need a Long Arm kit or it will ride like crap, and the cheapest 6" long arm is IRO and that is $1499 + shipping + installations, WJ's are expensive to lift because they are not as popular to lift.

Sure you could probably go with 2" Budget Boost (basically rubber blocks under the springs) and cut the hell out of the fenders, and add bump stops to limit your flex - It will ride like crap and wheel like crap.

What rear axle do you have, does it have a rubber drain plug? then it is probably a Dana 35 and it will PROBABLY not hold up to 33" tires, especially if you are going to be Rock Climbing in Arizona.

You also have to start looking at Axle Gearing, going with bigger tires reduce your final gear ratio and will kill the power and torque of your motor on and off road.

Then you have to look at your driveshafts, the WJ driveshafts are a non-ujoint (drawing blank on the name) so the do not handle lifts well, generally you have to replace the transfercase yokes and axle yokes, and order new driveshafts or you will be blowing driveshafts and have vibrations,

Then...... the list goes on.

I am not trying to talk you out of everything, just spark a little thought on your end before you just buy tires and lift and think everything will be good.

Here is a chart that is a good basis to work off of -



245/75R16 is about 31" depending on tire manufacture
265/75R16 is about 32" depending on tire manufacture
285/75R16 is about 33" depending on tire manufacture

On the cheap you could go with a Rough Country Lift 4" lift for $750 and trim the fenders and add some bump stops and PROBABLY get by running 33"s, I say probably because how a jeep reacts to a lift does vary from Jeep to Jeep... the biggest factor being driveline vibrations and the dreaded death wobble (bad design lifts, bad installations, and worn out front end parts can all cause it)

You need to research research research.

Bryweb thank you for giving me so much to think about I have a higher trim level of the 2001 grand Cherokee it's the limited do it has a Dana 44 rear and a Dana solid 30 front from what I've heard so far no problems with the drive shaft so I'm gona start with a 2 inch rough country and some 31s and just it up with the more comfortable I get thank you for the list

You are welcome, and yes the Dana 44/30 is safe up to 33" tires - even 35" if you are not too hard on the gas pedal and at 2" lift there are no worries with the driveshafts, even at 4" you are PROBABLY ok.

also like i did and will be doing more. i got 3 in lift springs for the front and put the front springs in the rear. if your on a budget its a great way to get lift. im making a 800 mile trip tomorrow so well see how comfy the ride is lmao but id do the front to rear swap, and a 2 in budget boost so youll get about 4-4.5 in lift and i ran my buddys spare 33s in a mud play one day and she surprisingly did pretty damn good and i had a decent amount of flex. when i put my bald 31s back on i get quite a damn good bit of flex even with the sway bar still connected...

heres a couple pics, im just running 31 BFG AT/s on 15x7 soft 8s with a 3 in front to rear swap. i plan on doing a 4.5 long arm kit after the first of the year. or throwing in 2 in spacers to clear 33s comfortably.








i can get up to the next 4x4 but we were at 40-45 mph winds that day and its a little unstable up that high and the fact were right by the water hahaha
