HELP? 1999 Grand Cherokee loses gas and gauges go wild
Hello,
I've got a problem with my wife's Grand Cherokee that our Jeep mechanic couldn't figure out.
While driving (once while at a light) at slower speeds, our GC's acceleration completely died. Please note, the rest of the vehicle's power stayed on. When this happened, the gauges dropped and went back up a couple times - the speedometer and the gas. There was no response from the gas pedal. On the dash, the gas light came on (the tank was pretty full) and the sentry key light came on. The second time this happened, the key light did not come on but the check engine light did instead.
The first three times this happened, we turned it off and back on, immediately back to normal and no problems. Our mechanic scanned it for codes, but none saved...
The fourth time this happened, I tried a trick once I turned it off, as recommended by our mechanic. I turned the key to the on position then back off, three times, with hopes of producing a code where the odometer reads. Once I did this, no code and the engine did not start for another five minutes.
We had the battery changed hoping this was our issues but it did not work. The problem still happened.
If anyone has any ideas on what could be causing this, I would be grateful...I'm not a mechanic and can fix minor things myself, but I'm trying to figure out if I can fix our vehicle or call it and get a new car. I really am hoping for a sense of direction, so I can at least try and resolve the issue.
Appreciate anyone's time and thoughts.

I have a 94 Grand Cherokee that I just got, and there is something that happens with a security measure that cuts the acceleration, flashes the lights etc. It's possible yours could be something like this because it has killed the battery (I think) and makes everything freak out. From what I understand this issue is similar for many models from 94 to 01(?) and there are many videos about how to address this. I'm just shooting blind but hopefully it can get you closer to what the problem is!
