Default hello all..NO (OD) Tranny question

First off hello to all of you listers. Im looking forward to my new to me Jeep grand cherokee(my first jeep). After reading various threads about the topic, is there a way to determine if I have either a TPS issue, tranny controller issue, ECM, battery issue, or PCM issue. The symptoms are no OD light when I press the button, I have to take off from 1st or 2nd by doing it manually, and I dont have overdrive. Last night when I picked it up and drove it home, I could see verrrrry faintly my security light on the dash. It wasnt of full illumination and would go out intermittently. Many thanks for all of your insight on prior posts.

Best,

Sounds like you're in limp mode. May daughter's 01 grand did that but also threw a code. Had to replace a couple solenoids on the transmission valve body.

Best,
Your '93 Grand Cherokee (ZJ) has the AW-4 trans. Since it goes through the gears manually, my guess is it's the Transmission Control Module which is located above the pedals, under the steering column support bracket. You might check the relays/fuses also. Here's the wiring diagrams for the ZJ in case you don't have it. Scroll down to the index, or until you find what you need. >Jeep Wiring diagrams
Hope it's helpful, and let us know what you find out.
And Welcome to CF.

Thanks guys for the insight. I dont have any check engine lights on the dash, and when I shift it manually all gears work good. Does the interruption of power from a bad, or disconnected battery have the the ability to cause problems with the cars computers? If the solenoids are bad will it definitely throw a code?
ol"blue- do you buy chance have a pic of the Transmission Control Module?
This will be an interesting vehicle to tinker with. I have a pull-a-part that has several Jeeps in stock. I appreciate all of your help guys.

Sorry my scanner's down right now. It's attached by screws and/or nuts and the connector is on the right side. The manual states you should disconnect the battery before disconnecting the module.

I stopped at pullapart today and found a 93 Cherokee that had the trans control module. The SOB was riveted in place. It's in such a bad location that I couldn't get it out with the tools that I had.

There must be various control modules on the 93. I called my dealer today and gave him my vin. He stated that mine was not the same as the one that I saw at the scrapyard and was located somewhere else. Maybe it was fate that I couldn't get it out yest.

It might not make a difference, but at the JY did you look at a Cherokee or a Grand Cherokee?
I'll see if I can get my scanner going and if so I'll let you know shortly.
