Default Heat doesnt work, help please

okay im going to go ahead and admit i hardly searched at all about this. i dont own the jeep, its my buddies in my NROTC. he has a 2000 jeep grand cherokee with the 4.7l v8. I work on my IS300 some so he had come to me for help. his heat doesn't work, just blows cold air. i wanna help him before he spends a lot getting a shop to fix it. so any insight would be helpful. the engine temps are good, and i checked the inlet and outlet hoses on the radiator and top one (inlet i assume) is hot while the bottom is not. this is after letting it run for a while and driving it. this would mean a stuck thermostate based on what i read. but the guy at advanced auto told him that probably isn't whats wrong. so i guess maybe either the heater core or heat control valve would be the problem. but i figured i would ask if there is something that typically causes this on the jeeps that i wouldn't know? i saw something about the door closing off the heat when i searched a little bit? is this common? and also if there are any DIY for this kind of thing because i have never done this type of work. i appreciate any help, thanks.
