Default Headlamp assembly removal

Can anyone give me a "definitive" answer on how to remove the headlamp assemblies??? I've gotten many different answers and tried the instructions in my Haynes manual to no success. Some say remove the grill and some say just pull out the assemblies.

I want to remove my old faded headlamp assemblies and replace with new clear ones.

Remove the grill so you get a better hold on it, then just give it a good tug straight out the front. The new ones should pop into place on the adjusters.

Don't replace them, just refinish them! 3M sells a kit that polishes the head lights, I just did mine yesterday and the results are amazing. The 3M kit should be available at Autozone, pepboys or the like. This kit uses 3 levels of sand paper attached to a Drill disc for extra speed (which is the key, other kits have you do it by hand). Took about a hour to do both. They shine like new now and mine were nearly opaque with lots of deep pitting.

I wouldn't suggest the refinishing kit, I used it on my 99 Grand Cherokee and it lasted maybe 4 months. I finally replaced the lights by taking off the grill and pulling straight out. It may take a little muscle. In my 99 there are also vertical bolts that hold the lights in place that need to be taken out. Once you put new ones in you may need to adjust them and the Haynes manual should tell you how. When taking them out it will feel like you are going to break them but you wont. I also had to use pry tools to get extra leverage.
