Default Grand Cherokee Shutdown

I have a friend that owns a '96 Grand Cherokee with a 5.7 Hemi engine. He was driving down the highway and accelerated the vehicle to pass another. When the Jeep went back to Overdrive, it started sputtering and shut down. He was unable to restart it and had it towed home. Any inputs?

And I take it since he hasn't been able to restart it. Does it crank even?

The 96 ZJ did not have a 5.7 Hemi, sure it's not a 2006?

5.2 Hemi. Won't restart and heavy smell of fuel during cranks.

5.2 is not a Hemi, but anyway, he needs to check for spark. No spark could be caused by a bad crank sensor, cam sensor, coil, open circuit in the primary ignition, or a bad PCM.

Crank and cam sensors checked good, new coil and spark plugs plus wires, new distributor cap, and still no joy.

You checked for spark at the plug?
If you have spark, try holding the gas pedal to the floor to clear out the excess fuel in the cylinders (flooded)

It was checked at the end of the wire going to the distributor cap. I'm not sure if he checked the spark at each individual wire; I do know that he changed the spark plugs, spark plug wires, and the distributor cap.

We found the pin that goes to the ASD relay from the PCM with severe corrosion. There are also a couple of corrosion spots in other places in the PCM.
