Grand Cherokee making noise when turning left
#31
Agreed! Great input x91j and jjjingle36!
I have had the same problem for at least 3 to 4 years with the "growling" sound only on tight U-turns or parking lot manuevers. Going straight = no noise. Slow tight turns = loud growling sound from the rear differential. (At first I thought it was the front end.) We added the Jeep recommended limited slip differential lube (4oz.) to the rear end differential and the noise went away, no immediately but after about a week of driving. This was amazing as we have been putting up with that aggravating noise for a very long time. The vehicle is a 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee with QuadraTrack (4 wheel drive all the time). Many thanks to you folks and this web site. I hope my confirmation of this similar situation also helps others.

If any of you have the quadra-drive all time 4wd like I do on my '99 Limited then it is simply a function of the vehicle being in 4wd at all times. I checked with a mechanic and dealership and both said there was no issue and that is was a normal occurrence. I have had mine for 6 years and have never had any issues due to the noise just more of an annoyance in parking lots but if you were to take any other suv/truck and place it in 4wd and demand a sharp low-speed turn the same noise would occur.

04 GC larado binding and vibrating when turning left
Yeah i have read responses to this issue and several fix ideas. so my 04 150k miles, turn hard left but not right the body shakes and feels like the tires are fighting each-other and on pavement you can smell burnt rubber. i also have an identical 03 with 170k on it that i have had 2 years now. it does not do that...at all. yes the awd works well on the 03, we get snow and it was fun. so the "its normal awd operation" is false. when jacked up off all 4 no problem.
so far i did
Differential fluid change and additive. Fail
Tcase fluid change... fail
the pain in the butt Viscus coupler change at $380.....fail
still no change at all. taking it to the shop to have them go over it next week. we are thinking its the differentials themselves.
my last wheeler had a tru-trek in front and a detroite locer in back. turning at full lock it would buck but nothing like the 04 groans and vibration.

your jgc
if it's coming from the front does it have 4 wheel drive or just rear wheel ? 4 wheel commonly the hubs rust or the transfer case locks in low 4 wheel , problem with my 01 jgc limited , or hub bearings or brakes . then makes a rubbing type sound on turning if it's 4 wheel you could take the immediate shafts to the transfer viscous coupler out as well as the vc itself making it rear wheel drive only , other then that check your brake pads n rotors for normal wear and your hubs for wear or broken hub /worn hub bearing if ones bad on that get 2 don't just replace one or you'll have the same problem from the other side of the SUV later on if it's the back more then likely hub bearings going out or went out bearing puller and new bearings should do the truck there .
