Got rear ended with ball in trailer hitch
Hey everybody... I have a 02 WJ limited with a 2 inch lift and on my way home from work a guy in a fusion hit me in the rear... no damage at all to me but he had a nice hole in his bumper... seemed like a decent hit. My ball had a small scratch on it but looked fine... pulled it out and no bends or anything. Looked under and everything looked normal... no stress cracks or bends.
I forgot i had the ball in still from towing my boat from the weekend... thank god i forgot!
Should I take the jeep in to have it looked at still or should i been good?

Pin looked completely normal... no bend at all. The bolts where its attached to the frame look fine too. Should i be worried about the frame at this point? Thanks for the suggestions!

it would not hurt to have it looked at, but i doubt there will be any damage. His plastic and styrafoam is no match for the trailer hitch ball.

My ZJ got rearended the same way by a jeep Liberty. Only thing that happened to my ZJ was the black plastic step plate on top of the bumper popped off. We had to peel her liscence plate off my hitchball. No other damage was done and I've since towed a utility trailer several times.
I stopped for a school zone crossing guard, she didn't!

Im going to take it to the dealer this Saturday anyway... Because I do tow my 4000lbs boat... Not taking any chances. But this is the reason I love having a hitch... w/ the ball of course.

Hope you're luckier than me. Got rearended in my 98 xj by a Cobalt - trashed him, but he hit the frame-mounted tow hitch center-mass: shifted rear bumper down without scratching it, bent no sheet metal, broke no glass or plastic, but bent both frame members near bumper brackets. There seemed to be no obvious damage to me, but I didn't try to open rear hatch - it was jammed. Progressive bought it from me; I bought it back at salvage and paid the frame shop to straighten frame. Net cash in my favor, but out the shop time.
Have yours checked out really well. Drive safe out there.

Word of warning, though. If you live in a nasty winter climate, don't leave the hitch tongue in too long. It will rust and you'll need a torch, chain, and a tree to get it out. I had to take the hitch off and use a 10 ton press to remove the one on my Chevy truck.
