front right axle - new - can't remove

front right axle removal trouble
1999 Grnd Limited 4.7L FT 4WD
New right side axle shaft assembly installed - new vibrating sound a week later. removed hub, etc to remove axle for inspection and to install new again. Can NOT remove the axle assembly - it rotates and turns but, won't slide out. Is slide hammer recommended or is there a better option?
