Default Front driveshaft removal

I have a thumping sound at 50-60 mph on my 2000 GC. Suspect it is the front driveshaft w/ 2 CV joints. Once I remove the bolts, how doI get the shaft to release. Must the vehicle be on stands to allow the CV joints to move. Does it take a prybar or just bar hands.
Thanks
