Front bumper build

Well I started on the next project. I thought I would share it on this site as well as maybe on one other one I have reading. Ripped the front cover off and went over to the scrap yard to see what I could find.

Then attached a couple of them

Now figure out the height for the winch. After which I will have to decide how I am going to finish off the rest. I have not decide if I will go with a round tubing look or a more square look.

And yes my camera is crap, it has a very hard time taking indoor pics.

Not bad, I had built one for my ZJ, it was kinda crap, but ditched it for gas mileage...

Looks like you have a good start though..

RRAM 11-06-2008 09:03 PM

well I am not worried about fuel, but I do want to keep the weight down as much as I can. finding scrap pieces is not the best way to do that. But its easier in some ways at least till I know what I want. The winch area has to be strong in my opinion, after that its just brush guards.

Yep, good start. Me I figure when I get working again(still looking for work :( ) I'll pick up another ZJ to build as a family trail rig not a DD like mine is now. I want a V8 for the next one...

Looks like a good start. I cant wait to build on mine. I always like the rounded look for bumpers. But sometimes the boxy look goes well. Keep posted.

well this is where I am at. Untill I get some tubing for some brush guard and sides I will keep it like this. Of course I will paint it or do the bed liner again. Kinda thinking lining I will do the corner plastic for fun and put a strip across the front of the hood for bug guard. Maybe get this done for next week end.

Looking real good, I like it....

I am pretty happy with the result. I went to the scrap yard, seen some parts I thought looked usefull and they fit together to build this. Cost 15 bucks. And the stuff they charged me for I didn't use. I have 3 3ft pieces of 4"X 5/16 left over. One of my goals was to not make it to heavy. I would say the bumper weighs about the same as the winch. Not sure how heavy that is, but I am guess it don't weigh more then 60lbs. I can grab it and stick in place quite easily.

looks real good. cant wait to see the end result. I vote for the bed liner paint on it.

well these are not the best pics. But this is how I decided to leave the bumper. I messed around with the idea of putting a stinger thing out the front, and also putting tubing on the sides but decided against it for now. this will work for me and is pretty clean. it sticks out enough that it lays brush down well enough. Now to I am thinking of doing the back one.

Bumper looks good. I too like the simpler clean look. MAKE sure you do something about making that winch hard to come off. A friend of mine just had his stolen while his heep was in his driveway. Unbolted it and cut the cables.
Quick question. Why would you hook the winch cable to the D-ring?

REWSTER 02-14-2009 12:12 PM

looks good very clean and not bulky

XJ?2010 02-14-2009 12:50 PM

yeah it kinda reminds me of a detours backbone only for a ZJ very cool nice job

A place to put some tension on it. Hard to get out if you suck the hook in to the guide. What do you think I should do with it.

Thanks for the compliments

I LIKE THE LOOKS OF YOUR SETUP. YOU GIVE ME AN IDEA OF HOW TO BOLT MINE TO THE FRAME WHEN IT IS COMPLETE. DID YOU WELD THE ANGLE TO THE FRAME OR BOLT OUT OF CURIOSITY? MINE IS QUITE A BIT BIGGER (HEAVIER) BUT I WASN'T TO WORRIED ABOUT THE FUEL IN THE END.
