Default front axle shaft

a friend of was too lazy to change the boots on the front axle shafts when they ripped-about 2 years ago. yesterday the driverside broke and is flopping everywhere. the first question i have is, when you put it in drive, the front right axle will spin since its broke. i put the parking brake on and put it in gear so i could verify it was broke, and i noticed when you touch the gas, the broken axle just spins, and none of the other wheels have power. its a full time 4wd, and i realize the front differential will only give power to the broken one right now but shouldnt the rear axle be pushing it? or is that now how it works? if that makes any sense. also my other question is i took it apart in the dark tonight, it looks like the hub assebly has to come off, and the axle will slide out...or do both the upper and lower ball joints have to come off to? i just read over what i just wrote and i cant even understand what i was asking.

Yes the hub assembly needs to be removed and then that broken axle will come out.

It could be in fulltime 4WD if it has a 242 transfercase. You never give us the statistics of the Jeep.

The 249 T-case will and can put all the power to the direction with least resistance. So ya not sending power to any wheel but the broken one, is completely possible...
