Default engine change

hello everyone, new to this site. I have been reading alot of the forums and see there is a lot of very smart people here so i thought i would ask for help here...
I have a 2001 jeep cherokee and the motor will start and run but has what seems like a low end bearing knock...oil pressure is very good no water in the oil and the truck has 170k on it. This truck was owned buy 1 person and is so clean i cant believe it has that many miles on it.. I thought a motor would be easy to find but i was wrong in my area it is hard to find a used one...i have a chance to buy a good running jeep that was smashed in the rear with the same4.7 liter engine in it and that has 150k on the engine...my question is will a 96 work in my 2001 jeep cherokee that has a 4.7 also?? What should i do, any help in this would be great.

Wait! I think you are mistaken. the 4.7 wasn't introduced into jeep until '99 and Dodge a year later. A '96 would be the Dodge 5.2 or 5.9 V8. I don't think it would even mount in the '01. They had to move the motor mounts in '99 to fit the 4.7 so the earlier 4.0 I6's won't even fit. Guys that need a 4.0 have to find one from a '99 or newer because they changed the block to fit the new mounting location. You may be able to find a Dodge Durango 4.7 and change your sensors and other stuff to it.

Welcome to CF! Glad to have you aboard.

Thanks for your help, i asked this guy hundred times if the motor was the same and he kept telling me it was the 4.7. ...well overnight the motor changed into a 5.2.........you guys saved me 150 mile trip...

Does anybody have any good idea besides the odvious on engines for a 2001 jeep cherokee engine...4.7 liter.. I figured i could pick one up easy at a wrecking yard for 600 to 800...man was i wrong, cant find one used and for a long block they want 1800! Any help would be great, dont have a problem doing the work just dont have a budget that high for this project..

The Dodge Dakota used the 4.7 in 2001. You have to use the same year engine. There was a change with the cam sprocket and cam sensor between 02 and 03, it will not run if you have the wrong ECM for the year of the engine.
