So I posted on the wrong forum, but needa get my truck driving again asap with some advice from all the great people here

https://www.cherokeeforum.com/f67/na...7/#post1006173

Just trying to find out now, the best bolt on replacement for my front drive shaft. Carolina drivelines has a replacement that has a ujoint in place of the CV that bolts onto the existing yoke? Worth changing to the U or just get another like I had? Thanks!

98 GC Limited 5.9 stock mostly no lift/tires (yet, still my DD)

CV joints were used on the awd equiped Grands for smoother operation, a Ujoint shaft will be stronger for sure, but it may cause some issues with binding. Maybe not so much with the drive shaft, but it would bind up and feel goofy if you used a couple ujoint axle shafts in the front axle with the awd transfercase.
It's not a good idea to drive your awd equiped Grand without the front drive shaft, it will damage the transfercase and you won't have Park.

So, should I stick with the CV style? Being my DD and having to depend on it atm, it sees a small % of its miles off road and even then its nothing crazy. I have no intentions on driving it without the DS and/or doin anything with the front axels right now.

- I just need to get it back to drivable asap with minimal wrench turning. Tips appreciated! or even suggestions where I could order a new one from for a reasonable price. Thanks! (Ive looked alot of places and seen a wide range of prices)

I have never done one, but I stumbled across a kit on OReillys website for those. Its a Dorman part 932-304. Seems a little pricey but might be able to get you going quicker at least. RockAuto was cheaper than oreillys though $131 vs $196. You can google search for it or click link too.

Interesting! I read in the Haynes book, said something about the CV not being replacable, that you had to get a whole new ds. Wonder how hard that would be to put on

- Just watched a video of a guy with 1 in a vice.... He changed it in like 30 seconds!

On my '97 V8 ZJ I had the original type 3 front driveshaft replaced with a type 1. See below.

Thanks Dan. Thats what I initially was going to do, but after looking more into changing the yoke out at the diff end, dont think im up for that right now. I thought the Carlona Driveline ones somehow hooked up without changing the yoke, but I think I was mistaken. Appreciate the help! Probably gonna get a CV kit for around $130, prob cheapest/fastest/easiest option.

It's your ride, and your decision.
I opted for the more secure feeling in running the u-joint DS as opposed to the CV equipped shaft.
