Dash illumination lights out
98 grand cherokee 4.0 auto
The gauges and interior lights work, just the illumination lights don't. Not for the dash, hvac, 4x4 selector, or prndl. I've replaced every fuse, checked engine grounds, checked plugs on BCM and soldered the headlight switch... If I drive long enough they flick on for a split second. |
Maybe clean the connection on the back of the cluster with contact cleaner. It's pretty easy to take the cluster out and free. I would start there. Sorry I'm not more help.

Could be the headlight/interior dimmer switch module, those are known for their solder joints breaking. May want to remove that and inspect all the solder joints and re-solder as necessary.

Here's an idea. On my 97 ZJ, I just soldered a jumper lead around the resistor slide so I couldn't dim them anymore, but I didn't care because it worked. Taking the gauge cluster out of the ZJ is a bit more complicated than the WJ. That's a piece of cake! One spring mounted trim panel and 4 phillips screws.

I inspected the BCM plug and the orange wire running out of it goes like 6" behind the bcm and into a kinda junction box thing? On the other side of that box another orange wire comes out. It went to a splice with all the other orange wires. I pulled the splice apart and got no power from the wire coming from the "junction box" |
