C clip axles shafts spit the clip off and the axle comes out. If you lock them, they will flex the housing and break a shaft. Just don't lock it.

you best bet for a rear dana 44 would be out of a 87-89 XJ with a towing package, it would bolt right up, but they are somewhat hard to come by

You can also get a 44 out of some TJs. The ZJ 44s have c-clips like a 35 and the center section can't be welded to the tubes and can separate. The 99 and later WJ also came with a 44 that doesn't have c-clips but has a different bolt pattern.

The ZJ D44a is stronger and weaker both at the same time.

First it's a D60 pinion with a D44 ring that is a "odd" gear pitch. So you very limited in gear choices.

The reason they break and are considered weak is the rock crawler guys. It don't take many impacts to crack the diff or ware through.

If you trussed it and skid platted the bottom it's very strong.

The center diff is the very same that is used in the C5 Vetts and the Vipers..

a Dana 44A does not belong on an XJ.
