I am in need of a dana 35 rear for my 97 GC with disc and abs and was wondering if there was any year difference in them? Also would I be able to get a rear with drums? or without abs? Coul all that be transfered from mine or is there diferent mounts? Thanks in advance

Like i said before the most important thing is the gearing. If you have a D35 in your 97 grand then you have a 4.0L and if it has a factory tow package it will have 3.73 gears,if it does not have factory tow it will be 3.55's. Why can't you fix whats wrong with the one you have now? That would probably be easier/cheaper than buying a whole new rear and swapping parts etc...

I couldnt find the other post earlier, but found it now. It has the 4.0 tow package I am not sure of. But the rear is completly gone. If you were to put it in gear it mades a really loud undescribeable noise and wont move anywhere. I had to take the rear driveshaft out and drove it home in 4 wheel.But everything inside it sounds gone. And with the low cost of a D35 i just thought it would be easier to just swap the rears just have to find one.

If it drove fine with no DS i'm guessing pinion/ring gear issue,carrier and spiders are probably fine. You can try to find a tag on the diff indicating gear ratio or get a build sheet or turn a wheel one revolution and count the revolutions of the DS(3 and 3/4 turns = 3.73's). I would try to stick close to the same year for ease of install.

as far as changing the drums to discs that would not be an issue. quite easy to swap your stuff over to the replacement. But like seed said just make sure your gear ratio is the right one. If the tag is gone you can pull the rear cover and on the crown gear there will be the number stamped. Just turn it and wipe the oil off and you should find it.

sounds more like a busted axle, lift one wheel at a time and spin it, the driveshsft yolk should spin if it does not probably just a trashed axle and is an easy swap.

The D35's on ZJ's are c-clip though,break an axleshaft and you loose a wheel.

If you are looking in to replacing it, I would look into a better axle. The D35 is undersized for the GC. It is only a matter of time before the replacement will go to crap on you especially if it has high millage. I am not sure if the V8's had a beefier rear end or not.

If you are looking for an upgrade, Peterson's had an article in it about putting a Dana 44 from a Rubicon in it. Not only will you get more beef but an electric locker as well. Another bonus is that is is 1" wider. A local shop here in town quoted me $1800 to purchase it from the dealer and install.

The 35 is not undersized for the grand cherokee and yes the 44A is also available on Z's and W's but he would most likely need a gear change to swap a 44 because he more than likely has 3.55's and all but rare early 44's have 3.73's.

If a shop quoted you $1800 to put a JK rubi 44 under your ZJ then that is a screaming deal. That bare bones axle from the dealer is $1600 right now and that does not include mods to the bracketry to fit your jeep or brake lines,yoke,etc....

I would not recomend switching to drum for ease of prject! your abs might not like it and get finicky

No, they didn't... The same axles were available in both 6 and 8's...

My ZJ has a D-35 with the tow package.. 3.73 with a trac-loc.
