Could I use a 97 4.0 engine block

I brought a 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee with blown engine ( rod came out the side of the block). I brought a 1997 engine block from the junk yard and when got the both engines block side to side I notice they are different (motor mounts, alternator, A/C). Is there a way I could make this work with out any hassle. Or should I just return the junk yard engine block.

How do I clean the out oil sludge from the engine without taking it to a machine shop. If I take off the oil pan , oil pump and the cam, could I go in there with brake cleaner or engine degreaser and clean that slude out.

Yeah you can just wipe everthing clean.

The 258 and the 4.0 are different

What is a 258? All I wanted to do is put a 97 GC block into a 99 GC truck. Because I can't find a 99 GC block.

yes the4.2 is diffrent but he said its from a 1997 and when did they ever use a 4.2 in a grand

Cheapest way to clean out an engine is to set it up on the flywheel with the oil pan off, clean it out as best you can by hand, spray it heavily with kerosene, let it soak awhile and spray it with a garden hose. You may have to do it several times, but it's cheaper than using volitile solvents. Just use a large catch pan under it, and use air hose to dry it. OIL IT WELL after it's clean! Water will ruin bearing surfaces in a hurry! While you're doing this you should clean out the water jackets as well and clean the head separately. You can separate the water from the kerosene and sludge mixture and burn it off. Makes lots of smoke, so do it where laws permit. You want cheap? This is cheap!

Before you get started, Check out if the 99 electronics will work with the 97. My state (New York) will not allow you to change emission systems for a prior year's engine. It must pass inspection for year of manufacture and after 95 that means OBD II. Of course this assumes you want to drive it on the road!

I give up on using that 97 ZJ block my accessories dosen't fit and also my engine mount from the 99 WJ dosen't bolt up.

Now I"m on the hunt for a 99 WJ Block.

what your block part number? I have a block in the garage that needs gone thru but good shape.
