Chime sounder

Does anybody know where the chime unit is located on the 2000 WJ? I'm getting spurious messages about my "memory seats" which I don't have. This all started after a "program" recall by the dealer. They think I have a wiring problem and want to diagnose it. Right! $$$$! No, I'll just eliminate the chime because I watch my gauges like a hawk so don't really need it anyway. I'll be driving down the road and I get the chime warning and the EVIC says "memory seat disabled. Vehicle not in park." or "memory seat disabled. seat belt fastened." In 50K miles that I've owned it, it never did this, but since the reprogram it has. I have manually adjusting seats, not even power ones.

So, where is the chime?

I don't know if it's the same, but on my 1998 XJ the chime is on the back of the speedometer cluster. It's a black disk 1 1/4" across and 1/2" thick. I had to take the board out and un-solder it.

Don't feel alone. My 2000 chimes and I have no idea why. Well. Sometimes it does and sometimes it doesn't. Usually in sets of three's . Then it stops. It's not the seat belts. I am sure of that. I am not getting any codes.

I don't know if this helps, but mine did that awhile ago and my son sitting in the back seat said the EVIC flashed something for an instant but he didn't catch it. He watched for awhile and said it flashed "coolant low" very quickly. I pulled over and looked and the reservoir was right up. I unplugged the sensor and it didn't do it again so I installed a new one. End of problem.

William08, thanks, I will look there. The cluster on the WJ is VERY easy to remove, just a clip mounted lower bezel and 4 phillips screws.

Update on my memory seat message. It quit doing it after you told me where to find the chime! It only started this stuff after I removed the 40 amp fuse for the ABS motor. I pulled the ABS relay fuse as well, but it turned on the brake warning light so I put that one back in. I put the ABS motor fuse back in and haven't gotten the memory seat chime since! WTF? Oh, well, I guess I'll just have to live with my stupid ABS system AGAIN this winter, shifting to neutral to prevent sliding past my mailboxes.

Glad you found yours. Have been dealing w/chime module related things on my 94 GCL ZJ (including electric door lock ground). Leaving mine out for now.

They interconnected too many things through the chime and the EVIC - nice for diagnostics when everything works

A simple trick for some electrical problem (you probably already know this) - disconnect battery for a little while (resets computer), the drive at highway speed for a little while.

I'm a newbie, so please excuse me if this can not work for this specific problem.

94david, funny you should mention a highway run. After I put the fuse back in, I had occasion to run 20 miles at 65 mph and then back again. That may have reset something because that's when it stopped annoying me! I know the PCM and BCM run self-diagnotic tests continually and set codes if something is amiss. Maybe the black witch knew I was after her! LOL! I'm tempted to take that fuse back out and see if it repeats.

Found the reset trick w/my 95 chevy corsica. Thought it was ready for junkyard. Replaced battery (was weak), which reset the computer. Then a highway run allowed the computer to re-learn. Now running very well at 252k miles.

Know that resetting computer may erase any stored diagnostic codes.

I leave my EVIC set on compass and temp. I find it very handy when expecting black ice. The compass is handy when driving those back country roads when you haven't a clue where they go.

Thought I just had a simpler EVIC system ('94). Researched and found I just have a GDM display. Glad I now understand what is does and does not display. It supposedly is not connected to chime but lights are enough for me.

dave1123 11-10-2015 01:28 PM

Oh, you have the OBDI system. Mine is the OBDII and is a lot more complicated. You just get flash codes on the CEL where I get "P" codes in my odometer. To make matters worse, my jeep has CA emissions.

94david 11-10-2015 01:43 PM

Hope This isn't getting off topic but its great to learn.
Dave1123,

Not sure if we're talking about the same thing. I know OBD1 and OBD2 refer to checking vehicle fault codes, either through a connection or watching check engine light (CEL?) flash.

I was referring to my Graphic Display Module 93 to 98 may have GDM or EVIC. My GDR is below the AC control, and just has lights for doors open, headlamp/tail lamp out, check engine, and possibly engaged in 4 Low.

Maybe the GDM is a nice improvement from a simple OBD connection and flashing CEL.

Sounds like the EVIC systems monitors many more things but can be a PITA if it isn't working properly in itself (diagnosing a diagnostic device).

dave1123 11-11-2015 02:49 AM

You wouldn't BELIEVE what just happened! Well, maybe you would. My computer shut down BY ITSELF to install Windows updates RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF MY POST!!! 3:30 EST

No, this stuff is good for everybody to know.

I'll try this again! My jeep is OBDII and works on a CAN-BUS system where all the modules talk to each other. Faults are displayed either in the EVIC or as fault codes in the CEL. A fault has to be serious enough to set a code in the CEL, otherwise it's displayed in the EVIC.

I'm not buying another jeep that's newer than this one. I can't deal with the electronics. Give me something with a carb and points ignition and I'm totally happy. Something that old and I can stick a 350 sbc in it!

OK, the OBD/CEL/EVIC/GDM discussion is getting past what I can contribute so I'll just watch for others input.

"Improvements" aren't always that - referring to windows and jeep.

Before you give up on newer jeeps, I've read on line upper management in Chrysler from 98 to 2000 were reportedly more interested in shareholders profits than the quality/reputation of the jeep. Things supposedly got better by the mid 2000's but probably still loaded w/electronics for those who don't even want to open the hood (do we really need a chime for low windshield wiper fluid?).

Anyway, maybe 2000 was just one of the bad years for jeeps. Good luck.

Now that FIAT owns jeep we'll have to wait and see.

I hear ya on the older simpler systems. In the 80's I had a 74 cherokee - nice, BIG, dependable, easy to repair. Ahh back in the day.

I wonder if any Army surplus jeeps are still available? (but that's another thread).

Not sure if this is within forum protocols, but you may find some more evic info at the following http://www.jeepsunlimited.com/forums...ay-not-working
