Default Check engine light on Wagoneer (1993)

Hello all,

I am new to the forum, but no stranger to Jeeps. I have had my 1993 Grand Wagoneer for almost 10 years.

My problem is that overnight, my jeep began running incredibly rough, and the check engine light came on (I am still right this moment trying to put together the codes via the FLASHING of the check engine light method). It sputters and shakes when I accelerate past 40/45 MPH. Also, it burns through gas almost instantly, and I believe I can detect a faint smell of gas while driving (I haven't noticed any gas leaking out though while it isn't driving). In addition, there is a whispery, almost sqeak-like noise coming from underneath near the exhaust that started the same day as the check engine light and the sputter/shaking problem. It idles very low right now, almost seeming to be about to idle out.

I was just wondering if anyone might have any suggestions as to what might be causing these problems. I had a tune-up done at the mechanic and that did nothing at all to correct the problem.

Any help at all is appreciated.

Rose

Update: The codes are (12), 45, 21, 27, 21, 51, (55). I did a little searching on Google, and I think it is the O2 sensor. That is my best guess, but I'm not entirely sure. The symptoms sure do seem to line up though. Would this be a hard thing to replace? I'm not incredible mechanically inclined, but I have done some minor repairs on my Jeep before (radiator and thermostat). Again, any feedback is appreciated.

I have just updated the post to include the codes. I'm thinking O2 sensor.

Also, "Bustedback", I noticed in your signature there is mention about death wobble and how a steering stabilizer is just a band-aid for the problem. I also have an issue (have had it for about 4 years) with death wobble. I have been to several mechanics for this problem also, and have replaced the steering stabilizer 2x and the trac bar. Any advice on that issue as well?

death wobble can be anything in the front end, its not isolated to just the track bar. can be worn out control arm bushings, ball joints, tie rod ends, etc.

AFTER checking all the other things, check your hub bearings. Often overlooked.

That combination of codes point to a 'possibility' of an over-voltage or under-voltage situation. Check battery condition, terminals and ground connections, and have the alternator output tested.

But, I would not rule out anything from a bad fuel pressure regulator to an injector stuck open, or even a vacuum leak.

I am curious as to what engine's in it...
