Default Changing Alternator on 98ZJ

How hard is it to change an alternator on a 98 ZJ 4.0? I've changed one on a Wrangler and Mountaineer before, but my ZJ is sitting on the side of the highway and I didn't even look under the hood before I left in disgust.

Once you get the battery and battery tray out of the way, it's a pretty clear shot at the alternator.

Hmmmm yeah, didn't even think to do that. I got it done with the help of a friend. Not horrible, but a bit of a pain on the side of a highway when it was 40 degrees and you're truing to beat darkness. Nothin like numb fingers and tiny nuts and bolts!

Did mine parked in the street infront my apartment. Yea changing an alternator is really easy. Probably easier than dealing with that up there

I did mine from underneath. Hard to do on the side of the road.

I went from underneath as well. It was pretty darn easy. It's somewhat near the exhaust if I remember correctly, so make sure things have cooled if you go that route.

My 97 ZJ was under the battery and I didn't want to take it out.

I replaced mine from underneath. I just turned my wheel a little to the left and tgat about it. Only problem i had was having to use a round file in the pressed in bolt shround for the top bolt since the reman tech didnt check the diameter. Anyway 220a and im happy.
