Carquest Oil

I purchased 6 quarts of Carquest 10w30 oil today for my Jeep. It's running a 4.0L I6 engine. Do I put 5 or 6 in? And is this oil any good? I have a lot to learn so appreciate the advice from everyone. Thanks!

Also, is it NECESSARY I install a new filter every oil change?

P.S. Will be changing my oil and fuel filter tomorrow for first time! And doing tire rotation (done that before) :)

It will take all six with a filter change, and yes, you should replace the filter every oil change. Do NOT use a filter wrench to install the filter, just go 1/2 to 3/4 of a turn after the seal on the filter meets the adaptor, and be sure to apply a thin film of oil on the filter oring when you install it.

Thanks. I didn't even know there's an oil filter wrench. I'm lovin' all this newfound knowledge!

uhhhhhhhhh.. ok.. really quick heads up because you are really inexperianced BE CAREFUL there is an oil pressure sender right next to the oil filter they are like $60 or so and can easily be broken,DO NOT over tighten the drain plug or filter you can split seals and strip the threads in your oil pan (real bad day)

also you might need a oil filter wrench to take your filter off, depending on how tight the last person made it.

also make sure you find the OIL drain plug it looks like this its what the torque wrench is on in the pic. i have seen far to many people drain the trans fluid on accident....

Just a tip I have used for years.Instead of putting oil on the gasket for the filter when installing use grease it will almost spin off by hand.
I was in the marine industry and if you had a stuck filter it meant the engine had to come out.Kind of screwed up your work order :brickwall:

All good advice here.

Do you know how often differential oil needs to be changed?

I was told to never use grease on the filter oring by many people over the years because the grease will make the oring bond to the mating surface.
Oil will work just fine. All you're doing is lubing the oring slightly so it won't stick and get distorted when tightening the filter by hand. It does not even have to be fresh oil, I just use a finger and catch a drip from the filter adaptor, then just rub it on the oring.

I always add some oil to the filter o-ring seal too.never had an issue putting them on that way.
