Hey guys. So im looking into buying a 98 zj. With 360 5.9 v8. It has about 160k. And everything seems to be in good shape. I m looking to get it for about $2400.

First question is this worth it? Are these as reliable as the 4.0?

It is all wheel drive. My next question is can I convert it to four wheel drive so I have 2 and 4? I have and np231 from an xj cherokee if that helps.

Any advice is apreciated thanks

The 5.9 (360) is a very reliable engine, every bit as bullet proof as the 4.0. The NP231 will swap in, but you have to look at the input shaft length and spline count. The input shaft can be swapped out to correct any differences, and of course you will have to check the drive shaft lengths too.

98 5.9s are pretty rare and sought after so if it has no issues i would buy it in a heartbeat.


The transfer case swap is easy, i swapped the 249 out for a 242 in about 3 hours.

Ya you can swap it out but you have to have a case 94.5 and later. They changed the gears and crap inside. Just swap your input shaft into the new case, like stated above its only a couple hour job. Hardest part is getting the dam mounting bolts in/out.
