Buying a Jeep in the next few days.. What do you think about this one ?
My mom is helping me buy my own Jeep, and Im pretty sure i want the V8, as much as I like the Inline 6 and how easy it is to work on. I dunno watching all these youtube video's of these 5.2 and 5.9 V8's and how they sound and stuff I want the V8... Like if i were to get the inline 6 id def get the NP242 select trac transfer case. The V8's dont have this option sadly
The only downsides i have about the V8's are i dont know how long these engine's or the transfer case, transmission's last. I know the Inline 6 the engine lasts for a very long time if you take care of it, same goes with the Select trac transfer case, and the transmission.
Gas mileage Eh honestly is it really THAT bad on the v8 ? Specs says its like 1-2MPG diff... Thats not that much, Im not a lead foot when i drive. I always go the speed i need to go and let go of the gas and barely even push on it and the MPG counter on top goes from 8-10MPG from start to an average of 25-27mpg on long roads. Average i get in the inline 6 is around 17.5mpg.
Anyway how long do the V8's last and how many miles is too many to buy them used ? The reason im asking is because i found a Jeep on craigslist with the 5.2V8 Limited. Leather Interior, has Fog lights, and 2 big lamps on the Grill, it has a class 3 tow hitch, it also has a Magna flow exhaust, and flowmaster on it. So this thing must sound like a beast. Its a 98 grand cherokee so it has the 44re transmission, and the I assume since its a 98 NV249 transfer case only thing that kinda bothers me is its at 195k miles. My moms Jeep is at 160k and we drove it accross country twice and used it to drive to work 30 miles each way up and down everyday. So the previous owner drove it alot.
The guy i talked too who is selling it says he has owned it for 3 years and doesnt want to sell it but he has too by the end of the month because he needs rent money.. I dunno if thats true or not and maybe hes selling it because it has mechanical problems.. However he said the engine and tranny runs strong, the car runs fine. He also added some huge speakers in the trunk im talking like 2 foot wide speakers laying on top of eachother... and has a CD player.
He is selling it for $2200 OBO... Another thing that gets me is it says AS IS.. Usually that means something is wrong with it am i right ?

before you buy take it to a shop for an inspection, that will tell you everything wrong with it. I have a 96 GC with 195K and it runs pretty good considering the previous owner did not keep up the maintenance on it. I love the V8 for the extra power especially when off-roading. thats my opinion
