Default bottom end

knocking noise coming from what seems to be flly wheel. if bolts have become loose on fly wheel would that cause a sound like a valve chatter? any other suggestions of what this could be before i pull transmission. thanks

Its 5speed?, can also be rod knock. how does it run? mabe you can remove the flex-plate/ flywheel cover on the bell housing to check the bolts. if thats fine it can be rod knock if it sounds like the bottom end.

If the noise shuts up when you put it in gear, it's loose torque converter to flexplate bolts. I've seen a Firebird 400 still driving on 1 loose bolt! Also check your bellhousing bolts. If they are loose, they will flex the drive plate enough to eventually rip out the center of the drive plate.
