Angry bad fuel consumption and thick black smoke

i've got a 1997 4ltr petrol grand cherokee, the fuel consumption has been getting steadily worse , it started juddering and chugging , put it on a scanner and it came up with " bank 1 to lean " i don't think its the lamda? it now has thick black smoke (like soot ) coming out the back. Any ideas would be welcomed .

I'm thinking it is the lambda (O2) sensor.... The computer gets a bad reading from the O2 sensor, making it think it's running lean, so it puts the fuel to it to get it back to where it wants to be. Black smoke means it really is running way too rich.

A vacuum leak could cause that code to appear also.
