I have a 1996 jeep grand Cherokee 4.0. While I'm going down the road sometimes my jeep will act like it is gonna die and if I pump the gas while I'm getting to the side of the road it will backfire. But once I get to the side of the road sometimes it will go back to running right and sometimes it will die.
Any help will be appreciated and thank you in advance.

Unfortunately there are too many possible causes without a detailed diagnostic check.

But good candidates for an intermittent/rough running engine are either gas supply or ignition timing issues. A backfire normally occurs when un-burnt gas is ignited within the exhaust. Therefore it would appear that gas is getting to the engine, but not being ignited within the cylinder correctly.

I would take a close look at the spark plugs and give them a clean. Check the integrity of whole ignition electrics, look closely for any loose connections or damaged insulation on wiring.
