Auto box 'Clicking' noise
I took my 97 GC auto for a long drive yesterday including a drive up a steep hill and a drive down a rough farm track.
Suddenly I heard a loud clicking sound and feared the engine was blown - it has just reached 174,000 miles. I put it into park and the noise stopped the engine was fine but when I went back into drive I realized that the gearbox was making the noise!.
The front pads and discs were recently replaced and there was also some smoking from them
So I drove slowly home and the noise appears to be gone today, has anyone else experienced this sound after hard driving ?.
The fluid level is OK BTW.

I can't help you with the noise, but the smoking brakes I can help you with. When the rotors (disc) are made and packaged, they put an anti-rust protection on them. The smoke you see is the stuff burning off of the new rotors.

Yes it's full time 4WD, I went for a 10 mile drive this morning and everything seems alright. No 'Clicks' from the trans.
I've never had NEW discs and pads replaced on any former car - I'm Scottish and like to save money, so I usually hit the scrapyard thats probably the reason for the unfamiliar burning smell
