Default Attn, ZJ tranny gurus!!

I need to know if there are any ways to beef up the auto transmission in a 1993 ZJ with a 4.0. My friend owns one, and it's starting to slip and act funny. He is looking to rebuild it, and wants the strongest set up he can have for it. I have rumors of building the tranny as if it's going into a truck, but don't know any more about it, thanks for the help!!

I am not sure why ppl say they are a POS. There are a great tranny, they can take a whole pile of abuse. They have been around forever. Only difference between these and the old 727 and 904 is the overdrive bolted on the back.
Now back to your question. Yes you can build them much tougher. You can put larger clutch packs in and get do the valve body. I am a firm believer in the TC being the most crucial part. That is what ussally trashes these things. The week link or POS part. the clutches come apart and fill the rest of the tranny with clutch crud and then it overheats and burns out. So when you rebuild it look into finding a good TC and with everything else fixed up you will out last the rest of the jeep.

A friend of mine owns a tranny shop and said when I was ready he could do all kinds of things to mine to beef it up. He said that the 42re is a good transmission, it just needs a little modifing. What the mods are....I don't know ' I will leave that up to him.
