In my opinion it's not worth the time and money to convert to a manual transmission in a late model vehicle that never came with a manual transmission. It's going to require more than just bolting a different tranny on, the PCM relies on the transmission quite a bit in order for the engine to run right.

What tells the pcm what the Vin and mileage is? The cluster in the dash? I'm going to an extremely cheap salvage yard this project might cost me 500 at the most

The PCM can't be flashed for something that was never built. But if you're really set on doing this swap you should look for a wrecked Dodge Dakota with the same engine and a manual transmission and swap the engine, tranny, transfercase, engine wire harness, and PCM into your rig. Still not worth the headaches in my opinion.

My wifes ZJ auto tranny as still great at 190k when it got totalled. Ive got a buddy with a WJ thats got similar mileage thats shifts smooth as butter. BUT that being said, it would be sweet to have a one off vehicle.

Yeah.... The older autos where okay... The new 6 speeds are all trash unless the clutchs where adjusted and proper maintenance was performed and even then some people have problems... I'm going to look up the article again so I can give you a better understanding of what I've discovered. And of chores I purchased the first year they made them...
