Default another 249 swap

Hey guys so I've been throwing around the idea of doing the 249 swap for the 242 since the viscous coupling is bad on my 96 grand Cherokee. Well this morning while looking at lifts I noticed the one I want won't fit with the 249 case anyway so the decision has been made to do the swap.

I read a thread on another forum about doing the swap but the input and output shaft part confused me. Can someone tell me exactly what I need for my specific model and what vehicle could be the donor?

I'm sure this has been discussed many times but I'm a newb and just confused. This will be my first time pulling a transfer case btw.

I just did a swap from a 249 to a 242. I have a 1997 Grand Cherokee Limited. The donor was a 1998 Grand Cherokee Larado. The swap was pretty simple. Took out the 249 and put in the 242. I did make sure to get all the linkages, the bezel for the console, and I even got the rear drive shaft (the front drive shaft was already removed from the 98 Cherokee). My front shaft worked just fine. Took maybe 4 to 6 hours to do the total swap.

I really shouldn't have to ask this question, but what do you have, the 4.0 or the V8? It makes a difference because they have different transmissions. Putting a 242 in a V8 is problematic because of the input shaft.

'93-'95 ZJ 4.0 is a bolt in. The most complete and accurate info on this swap can be found at http://jeepforum.com/forum/f13/trans...1-np242-685644.
